Diapers for Day Care

Many people email me with the question “Will I will be able to have my baby in cloth diapers in day care and if so which ones do you recommend?”

Every state is different but I would first recommend finding out if there are any state regulations about using cloth diapers in day care centers. Most of the time, with a doctor’s note, a baby is allowed to wear cloth diapers in day care centers.

Most day care providers think of the old-fashioned pins, prefolds, and rubber pants routine when cloth diapering is mentioned. Unfortunately that stigma of cloth diapers is still around but as the “green era” emerges this will hopefully change.

GroVia OS/AIO

To keep things as simple and as easy as possible we recommend using all-in-one cloth diapers (AIO’S). These types of diapers are the closest thing to disposables. All-in-one diapers are a one-piece system that fastens with snaps or aplix (Velcro). The two brands we recommend are the GroVia OS/AIO diapers and the bumGenius AIO diapers. The bumGenius AIO is a sized diaper, meaning you have to buy different sizes to fit baby and the GroVia OS/AIO is a one size fits all diaper, meaning it adjusts to fit babies from 10-35lbs. The GroVia diaper will fit an average to chunky baby very well. The bumGenius are a bit trimmer fitting and will fit any baby shape. There is a slit opening in the back of the diaper where you can put in an extra insert if you need extra protection in the bumGenius.

Most day care centers will only use all in one diapers and don’t want to use a multiple piece system (like a cover and fitted diaper or cover and prefold).

We recommend at least 8-10 diapers to bring to day care per day. This is a very generous amount but we always recommend that having more is just fine. Many day care centers have a scheduled change time for everyone.

Wahmies wet bags

We also recommend including some type of wet bag to contain the soiled diapers in. We recommend the new Wahmies Wet Bags in the All Day size. These wet bags are the most leak proof wet bags on the market and come with an easy to open/close zipper closure.
