Back to Sleep- SIDS, babies and Serotonin
All new moms worry about SIDS- Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and if it will happen to them. One way to keep your baby safe if to make sure your infant sleeps on his/her back at all times. Rates of SIDS also known as cot death or crib death, have plummeted where health workers have counseled parents and caregivers to put babies on their backs to sleep, avoid keeping rooms too warm and keeping loose blankets and pillows away from infants.
They have now found out that there is another reason for SIDS- Serotonin. Serotonin is the brain chemical that regulates sleep, breathing and heart rate. New studies, publishes in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that serotonin levels were 26 percent lower in babies who died of SIDS. The findings suggest that some babies have an underlying vulnerability to SIDS, which can become fatal when combined with an external stress such as sleeping face down.
So please keep those precious babies facing up when sleeping. That is what back to sleep is all about.
