The Wet Bag Dilemma

The Wet Bag Dilemma:

I frequently have parents ask if a wet bag is necessary?  To that I say- YES!  Why do I say yes when you could just as easily use a large Ziploc bag to hold soiled cloth diapers?  Well there are a couple of answers to that question.

 1. Ziploc bags are not meant to hold soiled cloth diapers- they are meant for food.  They really don’t stand up to frequent re-use associated with putting cloth diapers in them.  Not only are they likely to split a seam (from trying to stuff one more diaper in there), but who wants to wash it out when you get home to use again? YUCK!!

That leads to parents using them once and then throwing them away.  OK- so why are you cloth diapering again?  If your going to throw away a Ziploc bag a couple times a week, why not use disposables, same thing applies- they don’t decompose!

Wahmies wet bags

 2. Wahmies Wet bags come in SUPER cute prints that look nice in your diaper bag and are attractive when you are explaining what the heck you are using to some little old lady who saw you change you baby’s cloth diaper.  They are so cute and useful that you may actually get addicted to buying them!  You will probably want at least 2-3 if you go out frequently or have your child in daycare.  That reduces wear on them and you from having to wash too often.

 3. They can be used for so much more than just soiled cloth diapers!  My daughter has been out of diapers for over a year now, but I still use her wet bags for various things.  I even encourage other people to buy wet bags for all the uses they have.

I used her wet bags almost as frequently when she was potty training as when she was in diapers full time.  When we were out and about if she wet her pants- I had a wet bag handy to put her urine soaked undies, pants and sock in.  Not only did they keep the wet inside, but also the smell!

Now, I use my daughter’s wet bags for wet swimsuits and towels when we have been to the pool or beach.  They work great for this and keep everything else in the beach bag dry!  I also use them to put changes of clothes in when she is going to Grandmas’ house.  Her All-Day wet bag is large enough to put a couple sets of clothes, jammies and even her pillow in for over night visits.

So to the parents who ask if a wet bag is essential to cloth diapering I say, yes.  They make it easier while you are cloth diapering and can be used for a long while after you are done cloth diapering.  I feel that a product that will stick around that long for so many uses is money well spent!
